Prada Candy - Fragrance Review

When Prada first announced the release of their new fragrance Prada Candy, it came as a surprise. Taking the unexplored path is always a risky endeavor for any brand, but in this case it proves to be a winner.

Described as 'excessive' and 'impulsive', Prada Candy is meant to be a departure from the brand's existing fragrance line: the notes, the name, the packaging, everything seems to be completely different from what Prada has done before. In some ways that is true, but in many ways it isn't. Allow me to elaborate on that.

Prada Candy may seem/smell completely different at first, but it does hold a common thread with the brand's previous releases. It hints back at Infusion D'Iris and L'Eau Ambree, because the very core of these two scents is to be found in Candy, only this time it is wrapped in a gourmand veil. The cohesiveness of Prada's fragrance line is a result of the fact that they work with the same perfumer: Daniela Andrier.  The minimalism of Prada's Infusion collection of scents is very much present in Candy, as this is not a complicated fragrance at all and therein lies its very charm and appeal. I would classify Prada Candy as a 'minimalist gourmand': the list of notes only includes caramel, benzoin and musk and that is very accurate. It is exactly what you are going to smell from top to drydown.

Prada Candy opens with a significant dose of sweet benzoin. It is not really a heavy hitter, but it's not light either. It settles nicely and in about 20-30 minutes, it becomes a warm, friendly mix of caramel vanilla, benzoin and musk. I don't find it 'excessive' at all, nor do I find it extremely sweet or foody. It is a soft, powdery concoction that wears very much like a comfort scent for autumn/winter and like I said, it is charming in its simplicity. Prada Candy is very easy to wear if you like gourmands. The lasting power is good and the sillage is moderate. It has been likened to Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille more than once, and I can definitely see where the comparison comes from, but Prada Candy is much lighter. It is nowhere near as heavy, as complex or as smokey as Un Bois Vanille. I have both, and while I wear and like the Serge Lutens scent, Prada Candy is the one I would reach for more often. It is delicious and snuggly, while at the same time maintaining a sense of style. If you like gourmand scents, this one is definitely worth a try and the colourful retro bottle is oh so hard to resist.

Prada Candy is available in 30, 50 and 80 ml Eau de Parfum.

Review based on a sample from Escentual.com, which is one of my favourite places to shop for fragrances and cosmetics. I am not affiliated with Escentual, but I am a happy customer and I highly recommend them for their great selection of products and excellent customer service (worldwide delivery available).

Thierry Mugler 'Taste of Fragrance / Gout du Parfum' - New Fragrances

Thierry Mugler will launch a new limited edition collection, entitled Taste of Fragrance / Le Goût du Parfum, next month. The series includes new versions of Angel, Alien, Womanity and A*Men:

"With the ‘Taste of Fragrance’, the precursor of Haute Gourmand Perfumery is guilty of twisting fragrances, offering the rediscovery of Angel, Alien, Womanity and A*Men through their fantasized flavors. Thierry Mugler allowed the perfumers full freedom, challenging them to broaden their palettes of ingredients and introducing into each composition a 'taste enhancer'. An explosive collection of four gourmand fragrances, with superbly concocted notes that will nearly make your mouth water."

Angel Taste of Fragrance: with bitter cocoa powder added. The red berries, jam and caramelized almonds in the praline are combined with pure cocoa powder preserving its natural bitterness, making Angel infinitely succulent.” Available in 30 ml.

Alien Taste of Fragrance: with salted butter caramel. To embellish the wealth of the amber tones, the perfumer imagined a salted butter caramel, like the juice that forms when a dish is caramelized with sugar or honey at the end of the cooking process.” 30 ml.

Womanity Taste of Fragrance - with fig chutney. The sweet-savory accord becomes even more exceptional and more disconcerting with the intermingling of chutney made of figs that are subtly spiced and candied in sweet vinegar.” 50 ml.

A*Men Taste of Fragrance: with red pepper. Intense and vibrant, the fragrance oscillates between two contrasting dimensions: the “Oriental – Woody” notes, with the patchouli and vanilla exuding strength and charisma, and the “Vigorous” facet, with pure coffee for all the originality and character. For the ‘Taste of Fragrance’ version, these masculinely warm scents are brought out in a concentrate of red pepper for amazing power." 100 ml.

Each scent will be $90.

Burberry Launches New Fragrance for Women: 'Burberry Body'

Burberry launches Burberry Body, the brand new fragrance for women, today 1 September 2011. Seductive, sensual, elegant, timeless, iconic, memorable, Burberry Body is the Burberry world translated into a scent:

"We have been working on this for a few years now. Burberry Body for us is so much more than a fragrance; it is one of the biggest launches we have ever done, one that captures all the modernity and heritage of this British brand today, reflecting all the facets that make up the Burberry world." - Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer

© Copyright Burberry/Testino

Burberry Body is a feminine and effortlessly sensual fragrance with an eclectic combination of refined ingredients: top notes of fresh green absinthe, illuminating elegant peach and refined freesia; the floral bouquet of natural rose absolute and iris blends gently with subtle warm tones of sandalwood to form the heart notes, while the base is composed of woody cashmeran, creamy vanilla, sensual amber and musk. "The fragrance is very British and is the most sensual and feminine fragrance we have ever worked on. It’s sophisticated, it’s modern and it’s delicate. We wanted it to be light and feminine but also distinctive - something that appeals to women regardless of their age, it's more of an attitude." - Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer

The scent comes in a multi-faceted, iconic glass bottle with rose gold engraved check: "I often describe Burberry as a multi-faceted diamond and so it seemed completely natural that a fragrance that represents all of the different moods, attitudes and expressions of the brand is packaged in a jewel-like shape. The colours reflect the sensual and emotive nature of the scent. I wanted the bottle to be desirable as an object, not only because of the scent. I am always inspired by architecture and I wanted to translate the sensuality of the fragrance using these gentle rose gold and nude filters into something iconic and distinctive." - Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer

The ad campaign is fronted by British actress and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who wears only a rose gold satin trench coat and the scent. The campaign was shot in London by photographer Mario Testino under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey: "We worked with Mario Testino on a beautiful multi-faceted and sensual campaign, expressing the different attitudes of the Burberry Body. The trench coat embodies the iconic qualities of the fragrance as well as the spirit and attitude of the Burberry girl."

"Rosie is this beautiful, sensual English rose and perfectly captures the spirit of Burberry. She has this perfect balance of sensuality and confidence with humility. Burberry is part of her history and it felt perfectly natural for her to be our first Burberry Body." - Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer

Perfume Review: Elie Saab Le Parfum

Lebanese fashion designer Elie Saab has launched the first signature fragrance for women, Elie Saab Le Parfum, created by renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Classified as a woody floral scent, the notes include orange blossom, jasmine, rose honey, patchouli and cedar. If you are familiar with Francis Kurkdjian's work, you'll know that he is an expert when it comes to florals such as orange blossom, rose and jasmine, therefore it is not surprising that he created yet another pretty scent, beautifully executed and very wearable.

More after the jump

Elie Saab Le Parfum stays true to the official description of the fragrance and the list of notes, they are pretty much what you're going to smell. For me, this was not one of those scents that turn out to be completely different than you expected. On the contrary, once I got to test it, it smelled like everything the designer and the perfumer described. Perfect fit. Elie Saab said he wanted to create a fragrance that is an "ode to light" and "expresses a radiant femininity". Francis Kurkdjian said that he felt he had to "translate a brilliant femininity": "what I found fascinating in working for Elie Saab, was the idea of interpreting light; I didn’t have any specific images in mind, just sensations: the whiteness of the sun at its zenith, radiant femininity, a modern interpretation of voluptuousness." Well, they nailed it.

Orange blossom and jasmine are the main players here, wrapped in rose honey, over a light, woody base of clean patchouli and cedar. The rose honey adds a touch of sweetness to the concoction, making the florals warm and rounded, with no rough edges. The fragrance is luminous and utterly feminine; a 'sunshine in a bottle' type of scent, which makes it perfect for spring/summer wear, but ultimately, it is a perfume for all seasons. It is bright, lovely, elegant and it perfectly compliments Elie Saab's designs. If you are into white floral scents, you'll want to try this one. Lasting power on me: 6 to 7 hours. Overall, I would qualify it as moderately strong but keep in mind that I can wear strong scents, so my threshold when it comes to perfume strength is high. It is not a light scent, but it won't knock you out either.

Elie Saab Le Parfum is available in 30ml, 50ml, 90ml Eau de Parfum and in matching body products (shower gel 200 ml, body lotion 200 ml, body cream 150 ml and deodorant spray 100 ml). The ad campaign is fronted by Anja Rubik (pictured below).

You can find it at leading department stores and beauty retailers such as UK - Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols; US - Neiman Marcus, Saks, Nordstrom; Europe -  Douglas, Sephora.

Elie Saab Le Parfum is available online at Escentual.com and FeelUnique.com (both online retailers deliver internationally and are currently offering a free 30ml body lotion with 50ml & 90ml fragrance purchases, while stocks last).

Have you tried Elie Saab Le Parfum yet? What did you think of it?

Viva La Juicy Fragrance Campaign 2011 - Behind-The-Scenes Video

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at Juicy Couture's Viva La Juicy campaign shoot with model Sasha Pivovarova.

From the press release:
The evolution of the renowned fragrance’s image from a youthful aesthetic to a more stylish, elevated feel aligns with the brand’s current creative direction led by LeAnn Nealz, President and Chief Creative Officer. “We took our inspiration from a beautiful girl in the afterglow of a wonderful evening. She gets dressed in couture, goes out to a party, has a great time, and even possibly gets into a bit of trouble,” said Nealz.

“Since Viva La Juicy made its debut in 2008, it has become one of the top 10 prestige fragrances in the U.S. and maintained itself as a top 10 player,” said Robin Mason, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Elizabeth Arden. “Viva La Juicy’s success presents the perfect opportunity to reinforce our support for the fragrance, reinvigorate the franchise and partner with Juicy Couture to present the new Viva La Juicy fragrance and fashion creative direction.”
Fashion photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, expertly capture the feminine spirit and modern sensibility of the Juicy Couture woman in the new campaign. The images feature the grand luxury of a chic Parisian apartment, a beautifully appointed elegant space that becomes an ornate hideout from paparazzi helplessly drawn to the Viva woman and her scent.
Made from a delightful mix of mandarin orange, wild berries, honeysuckle, gardenia and creamy amber, Viva La Juicy is playful and alluring. The fragrance is boldly-goldly bottled, dangled with Juicy charms and rocked in a fuchsia wrap. Produced under a licensing partnership with Elizabeth Arden, the fragrance sensation continues to find global success in numerous retailers and new markets."
