Little Things That Count - The Weekly Roundup November 30

Music: Nelly - Just a Dream. Best Nelly song since his 2005 smash hit Over and Over featuring Tim McGraw. Yep.

Movie/TV Show: Robin Hood with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett is finally out on DVD in Romania. I got my copy 2 days ago. This is the hardcore Robin Hood movie (as opposed to the romanticized 1991 version with Kevin Costner).

Random thought: I'm already tired of snow.

Food/Dessert: I have had an inexplicable craving for oranges this week (Not that cravings are necessarily there to be explained). That was the healthy part. This is the not so healthy one: Chocolate Orbit Cake. Just click the link and start drooling!

Perfume: By Kilian - Cruel Intentions. Unique and unusual, this will catch you off guard, because it probably is like nothing else you've smelled before. At least that is what happened to me. I still can't figure out this perfume most of the times.

Blast from the past: Pearl Jam - Alive. Oh, the long gone high school years. I still heart Eddie Vedder. Below is one of my favorite photos of him. On a side note: if you have never listened to Pearl Jam's Ten album from 1991, you need to, it's a classic. And while you're at it, get Eddie Vedder's soundtrack to the movie Into the Wild. Goose bumps guaranteed. The good kind.

Place: I have never been to Costa Rica, but my friends who went there keep telling me how beautiful it is. Check out the photos below and feel free to daydream :)

Pink - "Greatest Hits...So Far!!!" Brief Album Review

I love Pink. She is an amazingly talented singer-songwriter who speaks her mind and stands for what she believes in. She's funny, witty, true to herself and a rocker at heart. Pretty good combination, if you ask me.

"Greatest Hits... So Far!!!" is her first compilation album and it has been released in 3 editions : US, UK and International. The track listings are slightly different for both the CD and the accompanying DVD, but whatever version you choose to buy, it's worth it.

Here is the track listing for the International edition CD:

7. Stupid Girls
8. Who Knew
9. U + Ur Hand
10. Dear Mr. President
11. Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely)
12. So What
13. Sober

16. Funhouse
17. I Don't Believe You
18. Whataya Want From Me
19. Raise Your Glass
20. F**kin' Perfect
21. Heartbreak Down

As you can see, you get 17 of Pink's biggest hits plus 4 new tracks, including the newly released single, "Raise Your Glass". What makes me happy about this edition is Pink's version of "Whataya Want from Me". Fact: this song was actually co-written and originally recorded by Pink for her "Funhouse" album. It eventually didn't make the cut and it was later offered to Adam Lambert.

There is also a Deluxe edition of the album, which, in addition to the CD, includes a DVD of Pink's most popular videos. Below you have the DVD track listing for the International Deluxe Edition:

1. There You Go
2. Most Girls
3. You Make Me Sick
4. Get The Party Started
5. Don't Let Me Get Me
6. Just Like A Pill

23. Please Don't Leave Me - The Funhouse Freak Show Edition
24. Funhouse - The Funhouse Freak Show Edition
25. Behind The Scenes Of The Funhouse Video
26. Behind The Scenes Of The Greatest Hits...So Far!!! Photoshoot

(The CD and the DVD have also been released separately if you wanted to purchase just one of them).

If you're a Pink fan, this collection is a must-have. Her 10-year career is well covered by this material and if this is what Pink had to offer in the last decade, then I'm really excited for the next 10 years, since she's only been getting better. If you've never seen her in concert, you're missing out on a lot, because, like all great artists, that's where she really shines: on stage. That's where you realize what a great singer she is. I've seen her sing Janis Joplin songs, Queen, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and she's probably one of the VERY few artists today who can pull those songs off admirably. Until you get to see her on stage in real life, you can watch her shows on DVD: Pink Live from Wembley Arena and Funhouse Tour: Live in Australia., both highly recommended. You'll be impressed by the acrobatics too, but honestly, it doesn't take a lot for Pink to put on a great show. All she needs to do is open her mouth and sing. She's the real deal. There is nothing fake or fabricated about Pink. She is sheer talent and emotion. This woman can sing the phone book and she would still sound amazing.

"Greatest Hits...So Far!!!" is out now.

Little Things That Count - The Weekly Roundup November 21

Music: Marina and the Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot. Probably one of the most played songs in my house this year. It's addictive, relatable and I keep coming back to it, I think it's because it relaxes me or something :D Nice video too. This girl is interesting, talented (she writes most of her songs) and can really sing. I'd like to hear what she has to offer on her next album. If you want to compare the studio version with a live one, here's her much-praised performance from BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.

Fact: Marina and the Diamonds is the stage name of Marina Diamandis, a 25-year-old solo artist born in Wales to a Greek father and Welsh mother. "The Diamonds" refers to us, the listeners. She often says: "I am Marina. You are the Diamonds."

P.S. - Don't let these photos fool you, she's actually a much more colorful person, I just happen to like black and white images.

Movie/TV Show:  I was in the mood for older movies, re-watched Babel, The Departed and The Hours. You're probably thinking: "Wow, what a bunch of "happy" movies", but it's all for a purpose: a post on Oscar movies of the last decade. By the way, the 3 movies mentioned above are among my favorites (of the last 10 years)....I do like happy movies too though!

Perfume: Byredo - Gypsy Water. This perfume is pretty much a no-brainer. Easy to wear, likable and overall one of those go-to perfumes when you want to smell nice and "uncomplicated".

Random thought: Why don't we know the Oscar host(s) already? Last year they made the announcement on November 3. It's November 21 and we still don't know, even though the Oscars for 2010 are going to be held a week earlier than last year's. If they don't announce it come December 1, I'm going to assume that :

A. they are going with a big surprise and want to build up the anticipation.
B. they have several options and can't make up their minds.
C. they can't find anyone willing to do it.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm okay with any of the following : Jon Stewart again, Tina Fey (alone or with Steve Martin or anyone else), Ricky Gervais (I thought he did a good job at the Golden Globes), Jerry Seinfeld (even though he said he was never going to do it). I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting someone, but these are the names that come to mind right now.

Food/Dessert: Lindt Dark Chocolate Truffles are evil. Can't stop eating.

******

It's been an eventful week, here's some stories that made the news:

The Beatles are finally on iTunes (yay!)

Ryan Reynolds is People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive (nay)

Daniel Day-Lewis will play President Lincoln in the upcoming Steven Spielberg biopic (yay!)

Pink confirms she is pregnant on Ellen's show. Ellen De Generes, that is. Yay, Pink's happy, I'm happy for her! Congratulations to the beautiful soon to be mommy!

Baz Luhrmann chooses Carey Mulligan to play Daisy in his adaptation of The Great Gatsby (considering the previous options, Carey's a yay for me).

Tom Ford is back and I am over the moon! We got a sneak peek of the highy-anticipated Tom Ford women's wear collection this week and it looks amazing. For more details, pick up the French and U.S. issues of December Vogue. He also confirmed he was working on a new movie and it is going to be a comedy.

Little Things That Count - The Weekly Roundup November 14

Music : Florence + The Machine - Cosmic Love. How great was this album, right? One year and a half later and it's still relevant. One of the best British exports in the last 10 years, Florence + The Machine, fronted by London-born Florence Welch, are back in the studio working on a new album, which makes me very happy.

Florence is the daughter of a Harvard-educated Professor of Renaissance Studies and Academic Dean of Arts at Queen Mary, University of London (mother) and an advertising executive (father). When she was a teenager, she attended one of her mother's lectures and was deeply impressed. "I aspire to something like that but with music. I hope that my music has some of the big themes - sex, death, love, violence - that will still be part of the human story in 200 years' time", she said years later, in 2010.

Cosmic Love is one of the best tracks from the album and it's one of those songs that is so much better when played at high volume. Just try it.

"The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart."

Brilliant.

Movie/TV Show : Black Swan. It hasn't opened yet, but it's highly anticipated and the early reviews are excellent : "a true gem", "fantastic", "Aronofsky's masterpiece". There's talk about an Oscar nomination (and possibly a win?) for Natalie Portman's performance and I can't wait to see it. It's the one movie that's been on my mind this week. The beautifully designed Black Swan website has gone live with videos, gallery, downloads and of course the trailer.

Perfume: M. Micallef - Note Vanille. A beautiful, sophisticated, grown-up vanilla fragrance that includes notes of cognac/rum, jasmine and sandalwood.

Random thought: I miss nectarines.

Blast from the past: Moloko - The Time Is Now. One of the sexiest songs I can think of, off the top of my head. It makes me think of silky smooth black lingerie slowly dropping to the floor. Why black? I love black. Black's awesome.

Food/Dessert: There's been a lot of chocolate eating going on in my house lately and the leading role has been played this week by a good, affordable dark chocolate from Ritter Sport, called A La Mousse au Chocolat. Forget the fancy French name. What you'll get here is a dark chocolate with a fine cocoa filling and it's delish. Great value for money. They have actually repackaged it recently and it looks a bit different than the picture below (which is the only one I was able to find) but the new packaging doesn't look extremely different, just cooler (it's black. Black's always cool) and more modern.

And speaking of Ritter Sport, I want to go here: it's their "Colorful Chocoworld" store in Berlin, Germany, where you can find a lot of details about the history of the brand, have a cup of hot chocolate or try one of their selected menu offerings in the Chocolounge section. Children can have fun in the Chocoworkshop area, where they can make their own chocolate. I'm sold!

This week, Jay-Z debuted a new glossy website, to coincide with the release of his new Greatest Hits collection later this month. Complete with videos, discography, photos and social media integration, it's a thing of black and white beauty, exactly what you would expect from one of the best names in rap music history.

Cool stuff one might find while surfing the net at 3 AM

I'm a night owl, ok? Never been a morning person, never will be, despite my repeated attempts. While surfing the net in the wee hours of the morning the last few weeks, I stumbled upon some cool stuff which I am determined to share with you in this post of utter randomness :D

How about some installations made of books, pencils and little plastic soldiers? Frederico Uribe is highly creative and you can see more of his work, including sculptures and paintings, on his website

Electrolux has a new line of vacuum cleaners made from plastic waste: "Vacs From the Sea". The Swedish manufacturer is hoping to raise awareness about plastic waste in the oceans and sent out teams to locations around the world to collect plastic trash. Even though Electrolux is a large consumer of plastics that are not recycled, they claim they want to change that.

This is one chair I might need. The "Lost In Sofa" chair that will help you keep track of items like remote control, books, mobile phone, whatever, because they can be safely inserted into the little spots between the cubes of the sofa.

Jean Paul Gaultier's love of interior design recently resulted in a collaboration with the furniture design house Roche Bobois. The collection includes mirrors, floor mats, a transformable sofa, a bed and many cushions.
